Abstract

Suspension culture conditions including medium composition, growth regulators, temperature, and illumination were tested for their effects on cell growth and essential oil production of Mentha spicata cells. Optimum cell growth was obtained with the following conditions: 27¡É, 2 §·/§¤l of ¥á-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) in B5 medium, and illumination of 16 hr per day. Phosphate was an important component for sugar transfer as well as cell growth. Carvone and limonene, major flavor components of spearmint oil, were obtained from the culture medium. Maximum oil production and production yield (Y_(p/x)) were 472 §·/§¤ and 0.158, respectively, after 20 days of cultivation.
